I've always loved mud, and now, now I make Art with it :)
When beginning a new sculpture I draw the animal from observation first then change it into something new and different. I love to bring surprise to my viewer, I know if I here a curse word that I did a good job, "how the fuck did you do that?!". if accompanied by a smile and the urge to touch my sculpture then I can't help but beam at them and sternly ask them not to poke my work, as I'm extremely protective as i've been known to talk to pieces I have even given them little kisses before they are loaded into the kiln (a ceramic oven). I pull a lot of inspiration from the natural world, its so full of detail that I can't help but want to pour that same level into my own work, the more complex the structure the more I've got to try and reproduce it in clay, Feathers are among my favorites, and scales too (you have to get the rythme just right or they look stupid), I love to show how drawn I am to animals and how they have affected my life and brought me such joy and wonder that on numerous occasions the world has taken my breath away, how soft or how rough, how they survive, I want my viewer to feel that same awe and love for my sculpture that I do for the piece and the natural world, plus i get to play with clay all the time which is never a bad thing :) dirty hands are happy hands.
